The grand tourer is being hailed as the next design icon for Audi.
If you've got a thing for sexy cars like we do, you probably can't wait to see the Audi e-tron GT in the metal. Production of the exciting new EV is already underway, and based on some of the details we've seen so far, it is going to look absolutely spectacular. The RS version is also going to be insanely quick, but more than just being a poster boy for Audi's performance potential with EVs, the new e-tron GT will also be the car that Audi considers its design icon of this era. Head of Audi Design Marc Lichte explains.
When the original concept was revealed back in 2018, Lichte called it "the most beautiful car I have ever drawn". In an interview with Audi, Lichte says: "Good design is achieved when a product is aesthetic and functional at the same time, and when it becomes part of a seamless overall experience. The foundation for aesthetics lies in the proportions: short overhangs and a long wheelbase combined with a lean cabin on a powerful body. The e-tron GT features all of the above."
He goes on to say that the e-tron GT is certainly Audi's new design icon. Audi wants this car to be as instantly recognizable as design icons like a VW Beetle or a Porsche 911.
This is a car that Audi hopes will personify the brand strategy "Living Progress" and "Vorsprung durch Technik" (progress through technology). With Lichte saying that "form follows function, aesthetics arise from efficiency", it's easy to understand why the car looks so good when its initial goal was simply to be as slippery as possible. The end result is stunning, so it's no wonder that "the design of the e-tron GT [...] forms the basis for the design of future electric models."
If all following e-tron products follow the same recipe and also include a clear focus on sustainability alongside luxury and performance, the e-tron GT will certainly be viewed as a symbol of classic EV design decades from now.
